Therapy for Black Families

Therapy within the Black family dynamic can be an empowering experience for all family members. We owe it to ourselves and our families to work toward a healthy family dynamic in a space that understands the complexities of Black families.

What is Black family Therapy?

Intergenerational and historical trauma are heavily present in Black families.Black family therapy should be tailored to the needs of the family. A licensed therapist trained in family therapy seeks to help the family start making progress toward their collective mental health. Every family is different, which means every family's therapy experience should include collaborative treatment planning that aligns with the family’s goals. Black family therapy is an experience that can help family members learn how to better communicate, and understand one another’s needs.

How Depression Can Affect Black Families:

As Black people we experience mental health issues at similar rates as our non-Black counterparts do, however we are MUCH less likely to seek out therapy. This can affect our ability to function and contribute to our families in the ways we would like. It is common for families to attend family therapy, and the therapist recommend members of the family unit seek their own therapy in conjunction with family therapy.

Our Approach to Black family Therapy in Dallas:

At BPOQe we offer several different approaches for Black family therapy. Our therapists are trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, Emotional Focused Family Therapy, Therapy for Black Couples Dallas, Structural Family Therapy, and Attachment Based Family Therapy. We understand each family has different needs; we do not believe in a one size fits all approach for Black family therapy. We welcome our Black families within the Dallas and Fort Worth metroplex, and all of Texas (virtually) to reach out to BPOQe to learn more.

Benefits of Black family therapy at BPOQe:

BPOQe is committed to helping Black families thrive. We acknowledge the intergenerational and historical trauma with which Black families live. We not only acknowledge this, but we understand what this means in healing spaces: getting to the root and working outward. At BPOQe all our clinicians are trained to be able to provide competent therapy for Black and Brown people. We offer family therapy virtually, meaning, not everyone has to be in the same exact space for therapy to occur. All our clinicians are licensed to provide Black family therapy to those who live in the Dallas and Fort Worth metroplex, and all of Texas.
