Therapy for Black Males

Black males are at a higher risk to suffer from mental illnesses like depression, anxiety and trauma related symptoms but are much less likely to seek out therapy or other mental health related services. Culturally competent therapy for Black males is a vital service that Black men need equitable access to.

What is Black Male Therapy?

Therapy for Black males is an important part of addressing the mental health disparities that Black men face on a daily basis. Our Black men deserve to feel free, healed and safe in their internal and external systems of being. Therapy for Black males is an individualized process that should be done with the help of a mental health therapist whose expertise is focused around Black male therapy Dallas.

Symptoms of Depression

Depression affects people more than any other mental illness does. Often times it is difficult for Black men to identify or acknowledge that they are experiencing symptoms of depression. Symptoms of depression may present differently for Black males than other racial/gender identities.

Common examples symptoms of depression in Black males are: low mood, feelings of sadness, difficulty getting adequate sleep, difficulty in making decisions, loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyed, diminished or increased appetite, and physical symptoms (headaches, stomachaches, irritable bowels).

What to Expect from Black male Counseling in Dallas?

Black males may find it difficult to find a Black male therapist, as Black male mental health counselors are of the least represented in the mental health field, especially in the Dallas and Fort Worth metroplex. Black males who are searching for a culturally competent therapist can engage in consultations with multiple therapists until they have found a therapist they feel confident to have alongside them in their healing journey. Black males should expect to feel heard, validated, and challenged in their therapy journey.
